If you’ve recently found a cockroach in your home, you’re not alone, especially if you live in Florida. But is it normal to have cockroaches in your house in Florida? The short answer is: yes and no.

Because of Florida’s humid climate, warm temperatures, and abundance of food sources, house roaches are a common concern. Seeing the occasional roach in your house, especially after it rains or during the warmer months, can be normal. But if you’re frequently spotting roaches in your kitchen, bathroom, or other living spaces, that’s a sign that something isn’t right.

Why You Might See the Occasional Roach

Florida is home to a few types of house roaches, including:

  • American cockroaches (often called palmetto bugs or giant roaches in the house)
  • German cockroaches (small roaches in the house, often in kitchens)
  • Smokybrown cockroaches
  • Woods roaches (in-house wood roach sightings are common near doors or windows)

A big roach inside the house now and then could be one that wandered in through a crack or was carried inside with groceries or boxes. If you live near wooded areas or have a pool cage, a roach in the house once in a while isn’t necessarily cause for alarm.

When Roaches In Your House are Not Normal

Regularly finding roaches in your house, especially during the day, is a sign of an infestation. A roach-infested house might have:

  • Roaches scatter when light comes on
  • Droppings that resemble coffee grounds
  • Egg casings
  • A musty odor in certain areas

So why do you have roaches in your house, even if you keep it clean?

Common Reasons Roaches Get Inside:

  • Cracks, gaps, or crevices: Roaches can squeeze through openings around windows, doors, plumbing, and foundations.
  • Food and moisture: Crumbs, grease, pet food, and standing water (especially in kitchens and bathrooms) attract roaches.
  • Unsealed trash or spills left behind can act like an open invitation.
  • Worn weather stripping or gaps beneath doors make it easy for roaches to enter unnoticed.

Even a clean house can have roaches if there are access points or hidden attractants.

How to Get Rid of Roaches in Your House

DIY remedies and store-bought sprays might kill the roaches you see, but they won’t eliminate the colony. Roaches breed quickly, and many hide deep within walls or under appliances.

Here’s how to get rid of roaches in your house effectively:

  • Seal up entry points – look around pipes, windows, baseboards, and under doors.
  • Keep your home dry and food sealed – quickly fix any leaks and clean up spills.
  • Remove clutter, especially in dark or deep places where roaches hide.
  • Schedule a professional treatment for long-lasting relief.
