Spiders can be an unsettling problem for homeowners in Dunedin. Given our warm, humid climate, these pests are frequently found in homes. Professional treatment is important to ensure your home remains protected and free form these creepy crawlies.
Where Dunedin Homeowners Are Actually Seeing These Three Species
Three spiders stand out around Dunedin homes, and each one shows up in a genuinely different spot.
Banana Spiders, more formally golden silk orb weavers, build large, remarkably strong webs between trees, often stretched several feet across, strong enough that you feel them before you see them. They favor exactly what kind of tall, mature tree canopy found throughout Hammock Park and along the shadier sections of the Pinellas Trail. A property backing up to either one may eventually have a banana spider web strung between trees at the edge of the yard, especially where mature canopy creates good anchor points. They’re large and startling, but they generally avoid people, and their bites are uncommon and not considered medically significant. They’d much rather stay in their web than confront anything your size.
Spiny orb weavers show up in a completely different setting: garden beds, shrub lines, and the smaller ornamental plants closer to the house rather than the tall tree canopy banana spiders prefer. They’re small, brightly colored, with a distinctive spiked abdomen, and they build tidy, compact circular webs rather than the sprawling ones strung between trees. If you’re seeing a small, spiky, colorful spider near your flower beds rather than a large one between trees, this is almost certainly what you’re looking at.
Wolf spiders are the ones homeowners find at ground level, moving across a garage floor, through mulch, or across a patio at night. They don’t build webs at all. Hammock Park’s forest floor, with its deep layer of leaf litter, gives wolf spiders plenty of ground cover to hunt through. Similar conditions around a Dunedin property can give them places to move and hunt close to home.
