You keep the garage door closed. You wipe the counters every night. And there’s still a roach as long as your thumb on the patio at dusk, plus a smaller one that keeps turning up near the kitchen sink. Greenhouse Termite and Pest Control helps Englewood homeowners work out which roach they’re dealing with, where it’s really coming from, and how to address the problem at its source.
Why They Call It a Palmetto Bug, and Why That Matters Here
“Palmetto bug” is the Florida nickname for the big, reddish-brown roaches most of us run into sooner or later. The name comes from the places they’re often found, including palmettos, palm fronds, and leaf litter. Englewood has plenty of that habitat. Lemon Bay Park alone covers 210 acres and includes native Florida vegetation such as cabbage palms, live oaks, slash pines, and mangroves. Many neighborhoods around Englewood also sit near wooded lots and preserved natural areas.
That doesn’t mean the roach in your garage came from the park. It means American cockroaches have an easy time living outdoors in this part of Florida, so the one that turns up inside may have wandered in from a palm, a hedge line, or a leaf litter at the edge of your property. It didn’t necessarily set up shop in your kitchen.
