How to Identify a Black Widow Spider
Black widow spiders are glossy black with a distinctive red or orange hourglass mark n the underside of the abdomen. The female black widow spider is larger and more recognizable, while the male black widow is smaller, lighter in color, and often mistaken for other species. Black widow size varies, but females typically measure about 1.5 inches with legs extended.
You can find black widow spider webs in dark, undisturbed areas like garages, sheds, under patio furniture, and in woodpiles. These webs are irregular and messy – not the neat, circular shape of other spiders. Black widow eggs are enclosed in round, silken sacs, often hidden within the webbing. In Florida, black widow spiders are commonly found outdoors but may occasionally wander inside.

Control and Prevent Spiders in Florida Homes
Black widow spiders are often found in dark, undisturbed areas like garages, crawl spaces, and sheds. Their webs are messy and irregular, usually close to the ground. Female black widows are more venomous than males, and their presence around the home can be concerning – especially in Florida where black widow spiders are more common. To help prevent infestations, reduce clutter, wear gloves when working outside, and seal cracks where spiders may enter.
